The Federal Reserve Raises Interest Rates

The Effect on Mortgage Rates and Housing

-Staff Writer

The Federal Reserve increased interest rates on Wednesday, but the increase does not warrant any rash decisions in the housing market. Almost all experts agree interest rates on 30-year mortgages will increase, but that increase will take some time to occur, and when the increase does occur, it will be gradual. The Chief Economist at, Jonathan Smoke, expects a half-percent (.50%) increase on mortgage rates within the next twelve months (Nerdwallet). Some sources say that the increase will come sooner: Quicken Loans CEO Bill Emerson said Thursday that “people looking to buy a house or refinance an existing home loan have a three to six month window before mortgage rates move appreciably higher” he also added that now is a prime opportunity to “take advantage of still very, very historic low mortgage rates” (CNBC). Additionally, homeowners with adjustable-rate mortgages should consider switching to a fixed-rate options. If you’re in the market to buy a home, it is important to speak to a mortgage representative to learn how fluctuations in interest rates may change the loan amount you can qualify for (Nerdwallet). To get in touch with a mortgage representative, contact Cheryl Maddaluna who is happy to provide you with recommendations of experts in the home mortgage field. *

Three Day Trippin’ Ideas

With summer slowly starting to wind down, there is no better time to make some great summer memories. Below I have shared a few of my favorite day trip destinations- Enjoy!

Spring Lake, New Jersey-

Exit 98 on Garden State Parkway

This pristine beach community is one of my favorite Jersey Shore spots and the best part is its close proximity to Somerset county. Be sure to hit the road early, so that you do not hit traffic and are able to find a parking spot close to the beach. When you arrive at the beach, anyone over the age of twelve will need to purchase a beach badge. As for lunch, enjoy a meal packed from home, eat sandwiches that you picked up from Jersey Mikes along the way or visit one of the concession stands along the boardwalk to purchase food. All food must be eaten on the boardwalk or elsewhere as Spring Lake has a no eating on the beach rule. Finish off your sunny, relaxing day by taking a ticket to wait in line at Hoffmans Homemade Ice Cream located in Spring Lake where you may choose one of their many flavors of delicious, homemade ice cream.

Griggstown Canoe & Kayak Rental-

Griggstown, NJ

My family and I kayaked in the D&R canal two summers ago, and surprisingly the whole family said they had fun. While paddling through the calm canal, you will be sure to spot many turtles: either popping their heads to the surface of the water or sun basking on a nearby rock. Rate and other details can be found on their website (, note credit cards are not accepted.

Tannersville, PA

I brought my two daughters and their friends here during the end of August last summer and they had a blast. The best thing to do is pick a time to go when there will be shorter lines such as a cloudy day or week day. My advice is to pack a lunch as the food in the park is quite pricey. Employees stamp your hand when exiting the park, so you can go to the car to eat lunch and then come back in. The park offers lockers to rent to place your belongings, bring quarters. There are a variety of slides offered as well as a regular pool and wave pool. General admission cost $35.99 and for those aged under 3 or over 65 the cost is $25.99. Visit their website for more details:

Please leave comments to let me know if you have ever been to one of the above places or what day trips you would recommend.

Stay tuned for fun things to fill your days locally!
